Aristotle Aristotle was one of the most influential thinkers in western culture, and a Greek philosopher, teacher, and scientist. He was probably the most scholarly and learned of the ancient Greek Philosophers. Aristotle mastered the entire development of Greek though before him and employed this knowledge in his writings. He criticized, summarized, and furthered the development of the Greek philosophies. Aristotle, along with his teacher Plato, are the two most important Greek Philosophers. Aristotle was born in Satagira, a small town in Greece. Aristotle's father worked as a personal physician for the grandfather of Alexander The Great. Both of Aristotle's parents died when he was a boy, he was then raised by a guardian. When Aristotle was about eighteen years old, he entered Plato's school in Athens known as the Academy. He trained there for twenty years. Plato dubbed Aristotle as the brightest student in the Academy and called him the "reader". When Plato died in 347 B.C., Aristotle left the Academy to join a group of Plato's followers. While there, Aristotle married a young woman named Pithias. Around 342 B.C., PhilipII, invited Aristotle to supervise the education of his young son Alexander. Alexander later conquered all of Greece, ran one of the most powerful empires, and became known as Alexander The Great. Aristotle was Alexander's sole teacher until the youth succeeded his father's throne in 336 B.C. In 334 B.C., Aristotle founded his own school in Athens called the Lyceum. In 323 B.C., Aristotle was accused of lack of reverence towards the gods by the Athenians. To avoid the death sentence, he fled to the city of Chalcis where he died a year later. After his death, Aristotle's philosophy was continued to be taught at the Lycuem by his successors. Aristotle's philosophy spread to Rome in 155 B.C. giving Romans their first contact with Greek philosophy. Aristotle's philosophy was then lost until its rebirth in the 1100's, where it was introduced to the Christian culture of western Europe. Aristotle philosophy was basically the opposite of his teacher Plato's. Aristotle believed that the artist is a creator, that the artist improves on an original design. Aristotle also believes that Imitation is necessary. Aristotle used Homeopathic Psychology which is to expose the good to the bad to purge the bad. Aristotle did not abandon his mentor's ideas he only improved on them. Aristotle's philosophy influenced a countless number of people since its birth. He was responsible for the tutelage of Alexander The Great, he Influenced much of Europe in its early stages, and he even affected the beginnings of the modern Christian culture. Aristotle was definitely one of the most influential Greek Philosophers of all time.

Not just the obvious changes like the renaming of the Summary section to â€Å"About† – but also some less prominent ones that you might not have noticed. Here’s a breakdown on how to use LinkedIn effectively, utilizing its new features for communications and networking success. How to Share Information Easily with LinkedIn Mail’s Voice Messaging, Availability Location Features Here’s a tip on how to use LinkedIn effectively with the new Voice Messaging feature, available in the mobile app. This tool can be a very useful way to make sure the intention of your message is understood, avoiding the potential miscommunications of written communications. The voice messaging feature does have its downsides. One author makes a good point stating, â€Å"When someone sees a voice message, there’s no way to discern the content. They have no idea what they’re about to listen to†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Therefore, connections who don’t know you might not take the time to listen to your voice message. Then again, curiosity is a strong force. It might be a good idea to preface your voice message with a written message just to be safe. To use the voice message feature, click on the Messaging icon in the top right. Click the plus icon to begin composing a message, then select the microphone icon at the bottom of your message window. Hold down the microphone/record button while speaking. Then hit Send or Cancel. Unfortunately, previewing your recording is not currently an option, so make sure you feel confident with your message before hitting send.. How to Schedule a Meeting with the Calendar and Location Features (Mobile Only) With LinkedIn’s calendar feature, available on the mobile app, you can suggest some available times to meet a new or existing connection. To do so, start a new message and click the plus sign to view all of your mobile messaging features. Click on â€Å"Availability.† Select a few time slots from your calendar that work for you, then click the checkbox in the upper right: LinkedIn will pull your information into the body of the message. Personalize and send! You can use the Location feature to let your connection know where you are or would like to meet in the future. Just click on the map icon, type in your desired location, and click the blue arrow to send a map. Note that maps are sent immediately – there’s no ability to add text to your message – so be sure to precede your map with a message explaining that the meeting location is on its way. How to Share Documents or Photos and Videos with Tags and Stickers Document Sharing in Updates LinkedIn recently added the ability to share documents as part of a post. You can now upload files from your desktop, Dropbox or OneDrive up to 100MB (but less than 300 pages) in PPT, PPTX, DOC, DOCX or PDF formats. Anyone who would like to access the document will be able to download your file as a PDF only. This feature is not available for mobile. Only time will tell. With LinkedIn’s mobile app, you can also add text and stickers to your videos and images. There doesn’t currently seem to be a way to search the available stickers, so you’ll need to scroll through them to find one you like. Perhaps LinkedIn will improve that functionality in the future, as well as increase the limited number of options available. How to Upgrade Your Interactions with Reactions  ­Ã‚ ­Ã‚ ­Reactions  ­Ã‚ ­Ã‚ ­In a previous article on how to use LinkedIn effectively, I covered how to upgrade your LinkedIn interactions with Emojis and GIFs. Now LinkedIn has provided another option for your communications: Reactions. LinkedIn’s Reactions function much like the features on Facebook, where members can not only like a post, but also love it, celebrate it, tag it as insightful or express their curiosity. If these new reaction images are not enough, you can include your own images with your comments to really stand out. You can share an event photo, a screenshot of an article with relevant content highlighted, infographics, and more. An image can draw more attention to your comment, so go for it! Click on the camera icon and attach any photo from your files. Note that you can’t post an image only; you must also leave a written comment. How to Recommend a Group Post Here’s a tip on how to use LinkedIn effectively as a group owner: You can now recommend important posts to members. Recommended posts will appear in group members’ home page feed so your group stays top of mind. To recommend a post as a group owner, click the three dots in the upper right corner and select â€Å"Recommend this post†: If you’re someone who writes articles and has been wondering whether it will ever be valuable to post them to groups, now you have an answer. Write good ones and perhaps the group owner will recommend your posts. As Josh Turner, WSJ author and founder/CEO of LinkedIn Selling, points out, â€Å"Familiarity begets trust. The more group members see your name, the better. Now that your recommended posts show up in LinkedIn’s main feed, members will be more aware of what’s happening in the group, and hopefully will visit and participate more often.† How to Stay in Touch with Your Coworkers The Teammates Feature is another possibility of how to use LinkedIn effectively. While it hasn’t been rolled out to all members yet, it will be soon. With this tool, you can add coworkers to your network as teammates. Then your teammates’ LinkedIn activity, such as posts, comments, likes, shares and work anniversaries will be prioritized in your feed so you can engage with them. To see if this feature is available to you, click on the My Network tab and look on your left sidebar: Click on â€Å"Teammates† to add coworkers. You can add a manager, teammates reporting to your manager, and direct reports. If you’re not already connected with a teammate, look for the â€Å"Connect† button next to their name. Once connected, you’ll be able to add notes for each teammate, as well as designate them as part of a current or past team. George Berkeley And Empiricism Analysis Philosophy Essay Empiricism is the doctrine that knowledge derives from experience. One very important philosopher to empiricism is George Berkeley. Berkeley denies the existence of material substances and says that existence of substances is depended on perception. In his famous Three Dialogues, he introduces characters Philonous and Hylas whose names ironically mean love of intellect and matter. As the First Dialogue starts, Hylas calls Philonous a skeptic by his definition one who doubts of everything or who denies the realty and truth of things (pg.219, The Empiricist) he soon gets Hylas to admit that he too is a skeptic. Philonous breaks everything down into two groups either having: primary qualities (qualities that can be measured) and secondary qualities (sensible qualities). In the following pages Berkeley goes on to prove that there is no inherit qualities within a material substance that makes it a material substance, and everything is viewed through perception. For example, a cherry is a cherry because it is red, sweet, round etc. But all those things are not innate things that are a cherry. They are sensible qualities because we see, taste, and feel that the cherry is red, sweet and round. Even though we all agree that before us is a cherry, we all will find that we have different perception about whether on not the cherry is sweet or bitter. Anything that is arbitrary is perception. His point was that if it is without being perceived, then it cannot be proven. In order to know a thing exists, we must perceive them. Berkeley also set out to prove that primary qualities only exist in our minds. His proof of this is that an object perceived by two different people could be larger or smaller, depending on how big that person actually is. For example a foot to me may seem moderately long, but a foot to a 6 foot person may seem really short. Hence, extension is not inherent in the object. He also gives the example of motion and how speed is measured by an internal clock In the Second Dialogue, Berkeley introduces Monism (everything is reduced to one), Dualism: 1) thinking (substance pilot) 2) physical material (substance machine), and Idealism (only perceiving minds and perceptions exist). This is where Philonous brings God into the equation because he needs a cause for our sensible ideas. His argument of causation is as follows: 1) sensible ideas must be caused by some spirit 2) I am not the cause of my sensible ideas 3) There must be some other spirit that causes my sensible ideas. Therefore, there is a God. His argument of Perception then is: 1) sensible things cannot exist without being perceived 2) sensible things exist independently of my perceptions 3) there must be some other perceiver. Therefore God is the perceiver. He goes on to say that since were purely passive in our perceptions and God is purely active, it is God that excites ideas in our minds. In the Third Dialogue, Hylas asks how idealism can distinguish a dream from reality (since they are both depending on the mind). Philonous answers him by saying that dreams and products of the imagination are faint and dependent on the will; sense impressions are livelier and do not depend on the will. Hylas also brings up the fact that if God is the author of all things, he would also be the author of evil; Philonous says that evil doesnt exist outward, only inward and that we are in control of our own wills. At first I found Berkley very convincing in his arguments about perception, but as with other philosophers, when he gets to the existence of God, their argument falls apart. The thought of God exciting all our ideas through our souls is a bit strange. Yes all perceptions have to be first perceived by God, and that God had to have an idea of us doing something for it to actually happen is crazy. I dont agree with Berkeleys use of God, but I dont necessarily agree that God just created the world and people in it and steps away from it (Descartes, Meditations); there has to be some type of middle ground. If you fuse the philosophies of Descartes and Berkeley, I believe that one could come up with something more believable, its just too hard to believe that God does everything because in a sense your saying that God who is all powerful and omnipresent uses us to act here on Earth, which is absurd since we are finite and he is infinite. I didnt quite get Berkeleys concept that God is all active and first perceives us doing things before we do them because is flawed. If that were true, you would have to infer that God is also the author of evil. If God perceives everything we do before we do it and everything we do our first His ideas, then he would be able to stop evil doings. What Berkeley says about us being in control of our own wills would have to be false because if that were true, we would be in control of our own perceptions in my opinion. It just seems that if that were true, then everything we did would be in a sense godly, and that obviously isnt true. It makes perfect sense to me that are senses play a big role in how we view the world around us, but although he was convincing in that concept I, couldnt help but thinking that Hylas had a lot of good points also. There must be something innate in objects that make them the objects they are, or else we why would we need to name the objects to discern one from another? I thought that Berkely had a good theory, but it wasnt realistic, although convincing. If I cant agree with Berkeleys use of God, then his whole theory starts to starts to fall apart because hes using God as a sort of cushion for his concept, but I dont think he uses God in the right way. Because Berkely is a bishop, he cant be really objective when it comes to God. He already has preconceived thoughts, and for philosophy to work one needs to dispel all previous conceptions on all subject matter, but obviously he cant because of his vocation. This is where his argument on God is flawed. I believe that the reason why philosopher arguments get confusing or nonsensical when it comes to God is because I believe that back then religion was uniform. Taboo to go against it, whereas now we have many. Many religions open up many different ways of viewing God. I believe this is important when it comes to philosophy because philosophy is most broadly defined as love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline. You cant truly have self exploration without being willing to accept new things or at least the possibility of new things. In conclusion, I could not agree with Berkeleys idealisms, but they did make me think about they way I view the world. At the end of the day, I feel that personal biases will always get in the way of the way we perceive.

Finite Evidence and Universal Propositions There is a lot of empirical evidence supporting the proposition '‘All metals expand when heated’. For example on many, many occasions we have observed metals expanding when heated. Because of this large amount of evidence we take the proposition to be true (or highly likely to be true). The proposition '‘All metals expand when heated’ is caled a universal proposition. A universal proposition mentions al things of a certain kind. The proposition '‘Al metals expand when heated’ is about al metals, not just some of them; it is about al pieces of metal, not just some pieces. Any piece of metal, any kind of metal, according to this proposition, wil expand when heated. Now as we have said there is a great deal of evidence supporting this universal proposition; it is not a proposition that many would doubt. But however large the body of evidence supporting this proposition, and whatever the variety, this body of evidence is finite. Our experience is finite, even our colective experience. But the proposition is universal: it refers to al metals, not just this bit or that bit, nor this kind or that kind. Any bit of metal at al, whatever kind, wil expand when heated. This is what the proposition says. The proposition does not just say, only those bits of metal that we have observed, expand when heated. Those bits we have observed, they expand when heated; but the proposition also says, even those bits that we have not observed expand when heated. This is what the '‘al’ means; this is why we cal the proposition universal. The evidence which supports ‘Al metals expand when heated’ is finite. The proposition which draws support from this evidence is universal. How can finite evidence support a universal proposition? A universal proposition, even when supported by evidence, goes wel beyond evidence. There are infinitely many bits of metal. Compared to the many bits of metal in the universe the bits we have observed is only a tiny fraction. How can a tiny fraction support such a large number? When we have no evidence for a proposition we would not take the proposition to be true. When we have only a litle evidence for a proposition we stil would not take it to be true. If we are to take a proposition to be true, or likely to be true, we require a large amount of evidence.

Zydeco music is a mixture of Blues or Jazz music with an upbeat tempo. Zydeco music has grown with my family. It is like a china dish your great grandmother passes down. The music is unique from the message it sends to the crazy two stepping dance that goes along with it. Zydeco music plays a significant role in my life. The first time I heard Zydeco music, I thought it sounded like someone kicking the side of a trash can mixed with a horrible marching band.I was about seven years old, but I remember it like it happened yesterday. My family was eating dinner at my Grandmother’s house and I had recently moved back to Waco, Texas with my dad. I could remember asking, â€Å"What is that noise? † It took me three years to understand what Zydeco truly means, but I took no time to learn the two-step dancing. I listened to Zydeco at a young age, no t knowing I did not understand the meaning behind the music, or the important role it played in my life.To me, Zydeco is more than music; it is a way of life. I have listened to Zydeco music through good and bad times throughout my life. My family plays Zydeco music at family gatherings and social events such as holidays, trail rides, birthdays, baby showers, and even funerals. No matter where we would be, we would listen and dance like there was no tomorrow. For as long as I can remember, my family has been playing Zydeco music at funerals. Some people may think it is disrespectful, but it is a family tradition.The reason we play Zydeco at all of our gatherings, is because growing up we were taught to always look at the positive aspects of life. So when a death occurs in the family, we listen to Zydeco and it reminds us that our loved one will always be with the family, but in a better place. Listening to Zydeco gives me a warm and grateful feeling inside. It comforts me to know th at no matter what the situation is, there is always a reason to smile. There are different styles of Zydeco such as Zydeco Jazz, Zydeco Blues, and the most popular is Button Box.Zydeco artists send different messages through their songs. Songs have different messages like celebrating; being in love, and the trials and tribulations a person goes through every day. Every generation has one Zydeco artist whose music they grow up dancing and listening to. Artists send positive messages about life or simply having a good time. Over the years, one of the main messages Zydeco artists send to fans is to be thankful for being alive. Older Zydeco music focuses on being alive, but I’ve learned that it has developed over time.However, I feel that there is always a Zydeco song to make me feel better. I believed Zydeco music could impact my life in ways it has. It has always been part of my family and that will continue for decades. That sweet sound transformed me the first time I heard it . However, the song that I always turn to is â€Å"Tu Le Ton Son Ton† by Andre Thierry & Zydeco. Andre Thierry’s song reminds me to keep doing my best throughout the week, and that the weekend is near. 3 Tips to Improve Writing in English The most important rule to writing effectively is to not repeat yourself. Each of these three rules focuses on avoiding repetition in English. Rule 1: Dont Repeat the Same Word One of the most important rules in writing English is to avoid repetition. In other words, dont use the same words over and over again. Use synonyms, phrases with a similar meaning, and so on to spice up your writing stile. Sometimes, this is not possible. For example, if you are writing a report about a specific disease or perhaps a chemical compound, you will not be able to vary your vocabulary. However, when using descriptive vocabulary, its important to vary your choice of words.   We went on holiday to a ski resort. The resort was very beautiful with lots of things to do.
